SiteGround Review 2023

More than 2.8 million domains rely on SiteGround, making it one of the most popular shared hosting providers out there.

Dedicated servers, cloud hosting, and WordPress hosting are all available in addition to the standard shared hosting.

To provide an honest and thorough evaluation, we signed up for a shared hosting plan, launched a test site, and have been monitoring its performance using an external tool.

SiteGround is among the best web hosts in terms of both reliability (99.99 percent) and page load time (356 ms).

Their support staff is efficient, helpful, and pleasant to work with. There is a Content Delivery Network (CDN), an SSL certificate, and email boxes included with all plans.

However, it’s not all upside.

Let’s take a look.

Pros of Using SiteGround Hosting

SiteGround shines from the get-go with rock-solid reliability (99.99% uptime), faster-than-average speeds, and a plethora of handy extras suitable for both novices and experts.

1. Good Performance – 99.99% Uptime in Last 6 Months

Since January, SiteGround’s uptime has been almost flawless. Their average uptime of 99.99% puts them towards the top of the list of trustworthy servers we’ve tested.

Visitors are more likely to return to a site with such reliable uptime. But more crucially, it ensures that your site will be available whenever a consumer wants to make a purchase, day or night.

Last 6 months’ average uptime:

  • October 2022: 100%
  • September 2022: 100%
  • August 2022: 100%
  • July 2022: 100%
  • June 2022: 99.99%
  • May 2022: 99.98%

2. Above-Average Load Time (356 ms)

When deciding on a host, speed is second only to security in importance.

To begin, Google found that if a website doesn’t load in three seconds, 53% of visitors would go elsewhere.

In addition, there is nothing that can be done to speed up a sluggish host. It’s possible that picture compression may reduce their overall file size.

You might try loading them via a content delivery network to alleviate server stress. If the host also isn’t providing enough speed, though, this won’t matter much.

With SiteGround, though, you won’t need to be concerned about that.

While their 356 ms loading time isn’t the best we’ve observed, SiteGround has consistently improved their performance over the course of the last six months.

4. Free WordPress Migration

The appearance of a “DIY migration” option by web hosting always causes us some trepidation.

That’s because the vast majority of them are subpar and make life harder for the consumer.

However, SiteGround might be an exception in this case.

They’ve produced a free WordPress Migration plugin that you may upload to any site.

There aren’t any tedious tutorials either.

The plugin will immediately assist you in doing the hard labor once you have generated a token from within your SiteGround hosting account.

Yes, it still needs you to do a little effort. But the good thing is that you may move as many websites as you like with this option. (In contrast, some servers advertise “free migrations,” but limit you to a set number before you have to start paying.)

SiteGround’s more expensive plans provide a complimentary service if you’d prefer have expert assistance (GrowBig and up).

If you need more sites than your current plan allows, there is a little upcharge of $30 per month.

5. Free SSL Certificate and Content Delivery Network (CDN)

Sites that do not have a SSL certificate installed will now be flagged by Google Chrome.

Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encrypts data exchanged between a user’s browser and the server, protecting sensitive information like IP addresses and credit card numbers.

Given the right conditions, this data may be stolen by hackers and others. Therefore, Chrome is acting in the best interest of its users.

That means that SSL certificates are effectively mandatory for all modern websites. They’re included for free with any SiteGround plan, which is a nice bonus.

A free content delivery network (CDN) from Cloudflare is another positive development (Content Delivery Network).

Distributed content delivery networks (CDNs) spread out huge files (like photos) over many servers in many regions.

In this way, the files may be kept as near to the users as feasible, allowing for speedier download times.

SiteGround offers servers in three different continents to ensure quick page loads and satisfied customers.

6. Beginner-to-Advanced Features Available

SiteGround provides services for a wide variety of needs.

Popular website builders, such as Weebly, may be installed with a single click, making it ideal for novices and bloggers.

For complete freedom over your website’s appearance, Weebly provides a user-friendly drag-and-drop editor (without needing to know how to code).

SiteGround also provides extensive integrations with Weebly’s competitors WordPress, Joomla, and Drupal, in addition to many more.

In a nutshell, you can install any of these applications with no effort. You won’t need the assistance of a programmer to do this.

You’re also in luck if you’re already a developer.

Larger plans provide with pre-installed versions of useful tools like Git, SFTP, SSH, WP-CLI, and phpMyAdmin.

Multiple variants of PHP are available for use. There is caching on many tiers that may be used.

Sites may use the available staging environments for preparation and testing before releasing updated versions.

SiteGround provides additional protection by using an artificial intelligence (AI) bot to thwart potential threats.

In an average hour, their servers reportedly prevent anything from 500,000 to 2,000,000 brute-force attacks.

That means you won’t have to deal with these issues on your own.

7. 99.99% Uptime Guarantee

Do you still remember the rock-solid 99.99% uptime average? Obviously, SiteGround doesn’t risk losing a lot of money by failing here.

The tiny print of a web host’s service terms is often where the bad news is hidden.

We were pleasantly delighted with SiteGround.

They promise “network uptime of 99.9% on a yearly basis” under their SLA. If they go below the minimum, you will get free hosting for a certain period of time.

It’s important to note that there are certain caveats to the uptime calculation. Exceptions include any necessary or unexpected maintenance.

SiteGround will not compensate you for lost time if your actions (such as using too many resources, installing incompatible software, or breaking the rules) result in server maintenance.

This strategy would also be vulnerable to any significant external assaults on their systems.

8. 30-Day Money-Back Guarantee

All shared hosting plans at SiteGround come with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Domain registration costs and “additional services” are often nonrefundable on this server as they are with the majority of others.

New clients only are eligible for the refund offer. Renewal subscriptions are non-refundable.

Cons of Using SiteGround Hosting

SiteGround’s 99.99% uptime and money-back guarantee for downtimes below that mark left us quite satisfied.

Even though they may not be the quickest, their loading times are still quite respectable.

SiteGround also has a number of useful applications for both novice and expert users.

But there are some drawbacks to think about before signing up. Here are a few of the most serious problems we discovered in our hands-on evaluation.

1. Higher Renewal Rates

SiteGround’s cheapest plan, StartUp, features a $3.99/month advertised price on their website. Although it’s not the cheapest price we’ve seen among other hosts, it’s still pretty reasonable.

However, there’s a catch.

Almost every web host we’ve reviewed to date uses the same trick. They get your attention with a low introductory rate, only to 2-3x the price when it’s time to renew.

For example, that $3.99/month rate jumps up to a whopping $14.99 when you renew. SiteGround’s other plans hike up to $24.99 and $39.99/month.

The best solution to this is to lock in the longest term possible to take advantage of that low rate for as long as you can.

2. Limited “Cheap” Plan

SiteGround’s entry-level plan appears like a fantastic value at first glance since its price is on pace with those of its competitors.

However, there are inconsistencies in the details of the plans.

For instance, you only receive one domain name and 10 GB of storage space, but you should expect to attract 10,000 unique visitors every month.

In addition to limitless data transfer, this package also includes (or unmetered bandwidth). When a site’s resources are stretched to their limitations, though, performance inevitably suffers.

That’s great news for sites of all sizes that may not reach such limits for some time.

If your site continues to grow, though, you’ll likely need to switch to a plan with more storage space and bandwidth.

3. No Free Domain Name

In order to win over new clients, most web servers provide enticing “freebies.”

That generally includes the cheap introductory fee and other features like email or transfers.

Free hosting for the 1st year and a free domain name are other standard features.

Unfortunately, SiteGround does not provide that feature.

If you don’t already own one, they’ll start charging you right away for a domain name, with prices for.com beginning at $17.99 per year.

Do We Recommend SiteGround?

We do, indeed.

For many years, SiteGround has provided reliable service. And because of their 100% uptime guarantee, you can be certain that you will never have to deal with any serious downtime.

The load time of their website is also satisfactory.

That’s because they have servers on a whopping three different countries and a free Cloudflare CDN account.

The use of SSL is also included at no extra cost in all pricing tiers.

Furthermore, if you sign up for the longest period they provide, you may save money.

If not, you’ll have to pay the steep renewal fees much sooner than you’d want.

To avoid paying another more cost, you should provide your own domain.
